Key Role of Economic Cooperation Organization Underlined

TEHRAN President Mohammad Khatami said here on Sunday that the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) plays a crucial and sensitive role.
In a meeting with the new ECO Secretary General Abdorrahim Govahi, he stressed that a bright and promising prospect will await the organization.
President Khatami underlined the need for making use of the organization's existing potentials in order to strengthen regional cooperation and bringing closer the viewpoints of the member states to one another.
In today's world which has no border, no single country can play a role, he said evaluating the role of the regional organizations and treaties in establishing relationship as very crucial.
As to success of regional groupings such as the European Union (EU), he called for further strengthening of ECO so that it may promote cooperation among the regional states.
On the forthcoming ECO summit in Tehran in June, President Khatami voiced Iran's readiness to facilitate cooperation among the member states in different areas of energy, trade, and transportation.
For his part, Govahi briefed the president on the current status of the ECO Secretariat and called for cooperation among the executive branches of the member states with the organization in order to attain the ECO's objectives.
Govahi was elected to the post of the secretary general during the ECO summit in Tehran.
